Title: Kampong in Malang
Size: 90 x 100 - Oil on canvas.
Description:
Malang is my favorite city in Java, maybe because it was built by the Dutch. It is a nice city, very clean, with good restaurants and shopping possibilities. The most favorite places in Malang, for me as a painter, are the kampongs. They are oasis of silence and relaxation - no cars, no motorbikes, just people living there in small houses. The atmosphere is so nice, and so slow down and basic, that I simply have to paint there. This painting I made sitting at the other side of the canal and lookinf to, yes, the other side, and this is the result. A very nice, relaxing, inviting painting and that all on the side of the canal. The laundry, the man who is selling bakso, the girl on the stairs to the water eating her bakso, the flowers, all these strange colors of the houses or part of the houses. The feeling, the impressions, plus what I see, has given me the inspiration to make this painting. I looks like something from the past, but believe me, Indonesia is full of this kind of places with happy smiling people. And again, no cars, no motorbikes, with playing kids on the sides of the streets without any danger and everybody has time and attention for each other.
PS - I made this painting in the rainy season and actually it was raining constantly, which can be seen. |
